Half a ton to the Grassmarket - thank you!

reports fromDavid Wardrop-White

Nearly half a ton of food delivered to the Grassmarket Mission, which provides help to homeless people in Edinburgh, following the Harvest Festival donations at our three worship centres on 19th October. We'd like to say a special thank you to the children (and their parents) in Newtongrange and Mayfield Primary Schools: the huge number of bags you brought to the harvest assembly really helped - we almost needed a bigger van! David Todd, who manages the Mission, said, "I am overwhelmed, once again, by the fantastic generosity of the people - especially the school children - of Newbattle Parish. We were nearly out of food and your tins, packets, bottles and jars are just what we need." David was expecting to serve hot meals to over 100 homeless people on the day the food was delivered.

Kirkbank Project - an update...

We are making excellent progress towards finalising Midlothian Council's formal approvals of the detail of the new building. A process called "porosity testing" has now been carried out by the company that will construct the building to check the condition of the ground on which it will sit. A report goes to the Congregational Board in November and we hope to have a definite timetable for construction shortly.

Then came the day we all went swimming - with more than 8ildren and a large team of adult helpers! Great fun and none of the children left behind an item of clothing, although an adult team member (who shall remain nameless) did!!

On Friday 17th October, a number of our fellowship attended one such event, hosted by Morningside Baptist church and led by Tim Hughes and Al Gordon. We joined between six and seven hundred other believers - worshippers and worship leaders from so many different branches of Christ's Church in Scotland - Free and Church of Scotland, Baptist, Catholic, traditional and free expression. The Bible-based teaching on passion, purity and perseverance, the spontaneous prayer and passionate praise of God our Saviour was so encouraging, reassuring, challenging, inspiring - God our Father speaking to us, His gathered Church; speaking to our hearts. I came away that evening with a number of thoughts: need to seek Jesus every day, to realise that, whether we feel it or not, His Holy Spirit is working in us as individuals and through His church family to transform our passion for God, to encourage and empower us to worship Him with our whole lives. The world needs to meet Jesus and our lives, transformed and freed up by God, will cause others we encounter in our daily lives to ask questions about what or who it is that makes the difference for us - as a friend put it, we become part of a Church of 'explanation' (Ref: Acts 2:42 - 47). Words from songs we sang come to mind: 'We must go, live to feed the hungry, stand beside the broken, we must go, stepping forward, keep us from just singing, move us into action. We must go'; 'Give us Your courage'…
